IX. Evaluation & Modification Strategies:

When trying to implement any new initiative, appropriate evaluation is necessary to determine the effectiveness of the initiative. Evaluating the initiative is important however, the evaluation must be thorough and appropriate. If the evaluation is not completed often throughout the implementation along with a final evaluation, than the decisions made about the effectiveness of the initiative will not necessarily be accurate.

Short Term Evaluation:
My short term evaluations have been inserted into my professional development plan. Every other month my staff will be meeting in small groups where they will be discussing different aspects of BrainPOP and its effectiveness in the classroom. Teachers will be asked to complete a form at each one of these meetings, one per group that will be submitted to the building administrator for review. He will then meet with all the lead teachers for the initiative and they will discuss the progress of the implementation of the program. They will also discuss where they need to be going to make sure that the program is a success. Unit test scores will be used as an ongoing indicator of student achievement. We ask that teachers look at their student’s test scores, and reflect on the impact that BrainPOP may have had on those scores. In addition to the meetings, the building administrators will be performing some informal observations to check for student engagement. Some teachers may even be asked to video tape lessons to show the increase in student engagement due to the implementation of BrainPOP.

Long Term Evaluation:
At the May professional development session, all staff members will be asked to complete a short ten question survey where their answers will provide data to support the effectiveness of BrainPOP being used to increase student engagement and student achievement. In addition to the survey completed by the staff, the students will also be asked to complete a survey as well. All data collected from these surveys will be collected, displayed, and provided to the staff at their June inservice. Based on the results of the surveys the determination will be made whether to renew the subscription to BrainPOP for the upcoming year or not. In addition to the survey results, Delaware’s new state testing program, DCAS will be used as a measurable indicator as to the effectiveness of BrainPOP. The test scores will be evaluated twice a year by administration and will be compared to the scores the students receive after taking the first round of the test, which is taken within the first 30 to 60 days of the school year.
